In 2014, UNAIDS released “90-90-90: An ambitious treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic“. In this document, the UNAIDS sets three targets to be met by 2020:
1. 90% of people living with HIV will be diagnosed
2. 90% of people with diagnosed HIV will be on antiretroviral treatment
3. 90% of people on antiretroviral treatment will be virally suppressed

If all three of these targets were to be met simultaneously, this would mean that 90% of all people living with HIV would be diagnosed, 81% of all people living with HIV would be on antiretroviral treatment, and 73% of all people living with HIV would be virally suppressed.
Since its release, the 90-90-90 targets have been endorsed by many countries worldwide, including Canada. The Public Health Agency of Canada released the first national 90-90-90 estimates for Canada in 2016.
